ASSASSIN'S CREED REBELLION REVIEW
Manage the Brotherhood, in byte-sized portions.

With the recent success of Ubisoft’s newest Assassin’s Creed installment, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Ubisoft finally decided to venture into the ever expanding world of mobile games. Now I know that mobile games have been getting a bad rap as of late, but I really commend Ubisoft for venturing out into other platforms. After what they were able to do with the Origins and Odyssey, we were wondering what was the next step. An Assassin’s Creed mobile game was obviously that next step in the evolution of the franchise.
Assassin’s Creed Rebellion puts you in charge of your very own Assassin Brotherhood. This new iteration of the franchise puts an emphasis on strategy rather than just running around and pulling unsuspecting enemies into large bales of hay. It has a brand new design, all new gameplay and it's been specifically designed for mobile. Look at it as Assassin’s Creed Heroes because you do spend a lot of time carefully expanding your Brotherhood as you recruit your favorite Assassin’s from different Assassin’s Creed universes.
The story follows the Spanish Assassins under Aguilar de Nerha during the Spanish Inquisition. What I really like about Assassin’s Creed Rebellion is that it puts you in the shoes of not only one Assassin but it places you in the fold of what it means to be part of the Brotherhood. The game features your very own headquarters that you get to micro-manage. Assassins can be trained and new items can be forged to power up your Assassins. As you level up your Brotherhood, additional rooms become available allowing you to craft even more powerful gear.

But don’t let the cutesy art-style fool you, this mobile game has a real big emphasis on carefully planning each mission. Equipping the wrong set of heroes will quickly lead to the “Mission Failed” screen. Before each mission begins you assign a group of three Assassins. The role specialization of each hero class fall under Enforcer, Specialist and Shadow. To add further dimension to the different classes each hero has a specialization in either Assassination, Stealth, Navigation, Disarm, Support, Heal and Tank. Depending on the mission at hand, different character combinations are better suited than others. Experimentation is highly recommended as there is more than one way to handle a mission, and trust me, there are more than enough missions to take part in.
You can take on 3 different type of missions: Standard missions, Loot missions and Story/Legacy Missions. Depending on the mission you complete, it will have a different effect on how your Assassin improves. Loot missions net you important materials that are used for crafting weapons, armor and accessories. Standard missions are key for gathering resources that help you level up your Assassins. Lastly, playing the Story and Legacy missions grants you DNA fragments that help you unlock new Assassins.
There’s a small part of me that believes Ubisoft is somehow hinting at the next evolutionary stage of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Like I mentioned earlier, mobile games get a really bad rap but Assassin’s Creed Rebellion works and it works real well. I love the fact that I am in charge of my own brotherhood conveniently named “Disciples of Wrath.” I really feel that my actions help shape how my brotherhood evolves. Each Hero has a very specific set of skills with their own set of weaknesses. This is great because no one hero is overpowered and each hero brings something unique to the ever expanding table.
Just to be clear, this is a mobile game, so the gameplay is marred by the “pay to play” business model. But the way it’s implemented makes it a bit more manageable whereas you have other mobile games where the emphasis is on monetization. Sure you have the occasional “Buy Now” pop up screen, but Ubisoft doesn't make that screen of the utmost importance. You get frequently rewarded with Helix Credits (Assassin’s Creed version of real currency) the more times you log in, so you are always progressing forward.
That’s the one thing to take away from this, you are always making progression. A short time after launch, Ubisoft launched an event celebrating Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. If you place in the top tiers you get to unlock Kassandra and/or Alexios, so there's more than enough incentive to get those to in your brotherhood. I’m pretty sure that this is just the tip of the iceberg in regards to special events. I expect characters like Edward Kenway, Connor, Baek, Aveline de Grandpré to be added in further updates and events.
For now Assassin’s Creed Rebellion is a great addition to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. There’s a lot of waiting involved so your characters can rest but that’s expected when it comes to mobile games. It doesn’t hurt the game, on the contrary, it adds to the complexity of the game because you need to make sure to use your heroes wisely. Building your brotherhood is nothing new in the franchise, there was Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood which lightly touched on the idea of base building. I hope that this type of in-depth base management can make it into future Assassin’s Creed games. Just imagine having a full brotherhood at your disposal ready to take on the ever growing threat of the Templars. We recommend you PLAY this game if you are looking for a unique kind of Assassin's Creed experience.
